April 17, 2003
ESPN, Inc. is launching the ESPN National Golf Challenge, an annual
competition for amateur golfers, which will determine the top two-person
team in America. The ESPN National Golf Challenge, which will begin in
2003, will include a qualifying event at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club in Choctaw,
MS, as well as approximately 120 other premier golf courses across the
country, leading to the national finals at Lost Canyons Golf Club (Simi
Valley, Calif.) in July. A portion of the proceeds from the event will
benefit charitable and junior golf initiatives. PGA Tour veteran Fred Couples
serves as the national spokesperson for the ESPN National Golf Challenge.
Qualifying events will take place throughout the month of May at each of the
participating golf courses. The national finals will take place July 15, 2003
at Lost Canyons, the day before the ESPY Awards. Members of each competing team
in the national finals and a guest will receive complimentary tickets to the
ESPY Awards.
“This grassroots initiative is designed to create the definitive nationwide
search for the top two-person amateur golf team while simultaneously benefiting
worthy causes,” said Tony Renaud, Vice President of the ESPN National Golf
Challenge. “We are fortunate to enjoy the support of PGA legend Fred Couples,
who only coincidentally has the appropriate last name for this unique pairs competition.”
Couples added: “Grassroots events such as the ESPN National Golf Challenge
are great for the participants, the courses and the game of golf. I’m thrilled
to be part of this nationwide endeavor and look forward to seeing the national
finalists in July.”
The competition is open to all amateur players who can form their own teams consisting
of any combination of two players, male or female. The total handicap for each
two-player team cannot exceed 27 strokes and no individual can submit a handicap
higher than 18 (USGA or other recognized handicap). Scoring will be best ball
of the twosome (net) using handicaps. Teams can enter as many times as they wish
by paying an entry fee of $150 for the first round, and $100 for each additional
round, in addition to the course’s golf fees. Each player will also receive
a variety of gifts for entering.
